A reproduction of an early Abbasid-era Qur'an manuscript page, featuring traditional Kufic script, red diacritical marks, and a gold verse marker.
This print reproduces a page from an early Islamic manuscript, dating to the Abbasid period. The script is Kufic, a style characterised by its angular, deliberate forms and horizontal emphasis. This specific variety of Kufic is often associated with early Qur'anic codices produced on parchment. The text is written in a dark, iron-gall ink, providing a stark contrast against the aged, warm tone of the vellum surface.
Visual interest is provided by the inclusion of diacritical marks, rendered in small, circular red dots. These marks assist the reader with pronunciation and vowel sounds. A circular gold medallion, or rosette, serves as a verse marker, breaking the rhythm of the lines and adding a touch of luxury to the functional layout. The composition is balanced, with the weight of the letters distributed to maintain a sense of order and clarity across the page.
Early Qur'anic manuscripts of this type were produced with great care, often for patrons of high status. The parchment itself is a durable material, prepared from animal skin, which has survived centuries of handling. The aesthetic of this work relies on the precision of the scribe and the harmony between the text and the empty space surrounding it. This print captures the texture of the original parchment and the depth of the ink, offering a view into the traditions of medieval Islamic book arts. It is a study in minimalist design, where the beauty of the written word is the primary focus, supported by subtle decorative elements.
