This etching and aquatint by Jacques Villon, titled 'Bibi Shining Shoes', captures a quiet, intimate scene with soft colours and delicate lines. The work reflects Villon's Cubist style and his interest in modern life.
Jacques Villon, born Gaston Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter, also known for his printmaking. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Villon developed a personal Cubist style, characterised by geometric forms and a muted palette. His work often explored themes of modern life and the human figure. 'Bibi Shining Shoes' depicts a scene with two figures seated in chairs. One figure, presumably Bibi, is bent over, engaged in shining shoes. The other figure, possibly a woman, is seated upright with her back to the viewer. The composition is rendered in soft, muted tones of blue, brown, and yellow. The lines are delicate, and the forms are simplified, reflecting Villon's Cubist approach. The scene has an intimate, everyday quality, capturing a moment of ordinary life.
