An atmospheric etching by Dutch artist Marius Bauer, depicting two dervishes in a moment of prayer through expressive, cross-hatched lines.
Marius Bauer was a Dutch artist known for his fascination with the Middle East and India. He travelled extensively throughout these regions, producing a large body of work that captured the atmosphere of local life, architecture, and religious practices. This etching, titled Biddende derwisjen, depicts two figures in traditional attire engaged in prayer.
Bauer utilised a distinct etching technique characterised by dense, cross-hatched lines that create a sense of shadow and texture. The composition focuses on the figures, with the background rendered in a sketch-like manner that suggests an interior space. The light source appears to emanate from behind the standing figure, casting the scene in a moody, atmospheric glow. His approach to the medium allowed for a high degree of spontaneity, often leaving visible traces of the needle on the plate.
This work reflects the broader European interest in Orientalist themes during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rather than focusing on grand historical narratives, Bauer often chose to document quiet, observational moments. The figures are rendered with a focus on their posture and the folds of their garments, demonstrating his ability to convey form through minimal, yet deliberate, mark-making. The print captures the quietude of the moment, with the standing dervish and the seated companion positioned in a way that suggests a shared, meditative experience. The monochromatic nature of the etching emphasises the play of light and shadow, which is a recurring element in Bauer's graphic work. His prints were highly regarded during his lifetime for their technical skill and their ability to evoke the spirit of the places he visited.
