Description
Biddulph in Staffordshire pairs a sheltered valley setting with the elaborate gardens of its Grange, where a grand house rises above reflective water and richly planted banks.
Biddulph occupies a valley between the ridges of Mow Cop and Biddulph Moor. Its best known visitor attraction is the National Trust garden at Biddulph Grange, a Victorian hillside creation whose separate gardens evoke places including China, Italy and Egypt.
A broad cream house stands above a dark clipped hedge, its chimneys and central tower catching the peach glow of evening. Below, pale steps descend towards a pond scattered with flowering waterlilies. Pink shrubs, rounded bushes and a sweep of close grass frame the water, which returns a broken reflection of the façade. Full foliage and open flowers suggest a warm summer evening.
