A masterful engraving by Raphael Morghen, depicting the Florentine banker Bindo Altoviti after the original painting by Raphael Sanzio.
This fine engraving by Raphael Morghen depicts the subject Bindo Altoviti, a Florentine banker and patron of the arts. The print is based on the original oil painting by Raphael Sanzio, which was long misidentified as a self-portrait of the Renaissance master. Morghen, a master of the burin, translates the soft modelling and psychological depth of the original painting into a precise system of lines and cross-hatching.
The composition captures the subject in a three-quarter turn, his gaze directed towards the viewer with a calm, steady expression. His long, flowing hair and dark cap are rendered with technical accuracy, demonstrating the control Morghen exerted over the copper plate. The drapery of his garment is defined by rhythmic, parallel lines that suggest the weight and texture of the fabric. The background remains dark, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of volume.
At the base of the print, the coat of arms and the dedication indicate the formal nature of this reproduction. Morghen was highly regarded in his time for his ability to replicate the tonal qualities of paintings through the medium of engraving. This work is a clear example of the technical standards expected of printmakers in the early nineteenth century, where the goal was to disseminate the appearance of famous paintings to a wider audience. The clarity of the lines and the balance of light and shadow ensure that the character of the original portrait is preserved in this monochromatic format. It remains a study in the translation of colour and form into the language of black and white printmaking.
