A graphite sketch by Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht depicting a street scene in Hoorn, dated 1915.
This graphite sketch by Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht captures a quiet moment in the Dutch town of Hoorn. Dated 22 September 1915, the drawing documents the Binnenluiendijk, a street known for its historic architecture. The artist focuses on the verticality of a traditional Dutch townhouse, using quick, confident pencil strokes to define the window frames, decorative corbels, and the steep gable of the structure.
In the foreground, a horse-drawn cart laden with goods occupies the street. The cart is rendered with economy, its form suggested through loose lines that convey weight and texture without unnecessary detail. The artist prioritises the immediate impression of the scene over polished finish, a common practice for his field studies. The composition relies on the contrast between the solid, static architecture and the transient presence of the cart.
Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht, primarily recognised for his military subjects and depictions of daily life, demonstrates here his ability to observe urban environments with precision. The work functions as a visual record of early twentieth-century Hoorn, preserving the character of the street before modern alterations. The paper retains the original annotations made by the artist at the bottom right, which provide the location and date of the observation. This piece offers a glimpse into the working process of a draughtsman who valued the authenticity of direct observation. The lack of heavy shading allows the viewer to focus on the structural integrity of the building and the simple mechanics of the cart. It is a study of form and place, capturing the atmosphere of a Dutch town through minimal means.
