A traditional Japanese woodblock print depicting the filial paragon Binshiken, set against a serene, snow-covered winter landscape.
This woodblock print by Wakasaya Yoichi depicts a scene from the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety, a classic collection of Chinese tales illustrating devotion to one's parents. The narrative focuses on Min Ziqian (known in Japan as Binshiken), a figure celebrated for his patience and kindness toward his stepmother. In this composition, the artist presents a winter setting where the protagonist is shown clearing snow, while the domestic scene unfolds in the foreground.
The visual arrangement balances the cold, wintry exterior with the warmth of the family unit. To the left, a mother figure holds an infant while a young child stands beside her, creating a sense of domestic stability. The background features a frozen stream and sparse trees, rendered with the characteristic flat perspective of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The inclusion of a cartouche in the upper right corner provides the textual context for the moral lesson, a common feature in series of this nature.
Wakasaya Yoichi, also known as Jakurindô, utilised a palette of muted blues, soft browns, and subtle ochre tones to convey the chill of the season. The line work is precise, defining the figures and the architectural elements with clarity. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied through a separate carved woodblock. This work offers a glimpse into the moral education and artistic interests of the Edo period, where historical and legendary narratives were frequently adapted for popular consumption. The composition avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the narrative elements to remain the primary focus for the viewer.
