Shibata Zeshin occupies a unique position in nineteenth-century Japanese art. Trained as a lacquer artist, he applied the technical rigour of urushi (lacquer) to the medium of painting. This work, from the series Lacquer Paintings of Various Subjects, demonstrates his mastery of ink-wash aesthetics combined with the physical properties of lacquer. The composition is sparse, focusing on a single bird perched upon a snow-covered branch, with the drooping form of a willow tree providing a vertical counterpoint.

Zeshin uses the viscosity of lacquer to create varied textures that differ from traditional sumi-e ink. The bird is rendered with a dense, dark application that suggests weight and volume, while the surrounding snow is implied through negative space and subtle tonal shifts.
