A delicate woodblock print by Nakabayashi Chikutō, depicting a bird bathing beneath willow branches in the traditional Japanese Bunjinga style.
This woodblock print originates from the Yūsai gafu, or Yūsai Picture Album, a collection of works by the Japanese artist Nakabayashi Chikutō. Chikutō was a prominent figure in the Bunjinga, or literati, tradition during the Edo period. His work often reflects the aesthetic values of the Chinese scholar-painter, prioritising brushwork and a restrained, meditative approach to natural subjects.
The composition depicts a bird mid-bath in shallow water, positioned beneath the drooping branches of a willow tree. The artist employs a delicate, calligraphic line to define the foliage and the ripples in the water, contrasting with the softer, textured ink wash used to render the plumage of the bird. The scene is quiet and observational, capturing a fleeting moment of natural activity with economy and precision. The use of negative space is characteristic of the period, allowing the subject to exist within a balanced, uncluttered environment.
Nakabayashi Chikutō was based in Nagoya and later Kyoto, where he became a central figure in the intellectual circles of his time. His approach to painting and printmaking was deeply informed by his study of classical Chinese models, yet he maintained a distinct Japanese sensibility. The Yūsai gafu serves as a record of his technical proficiency and his ability to translate the spontaneity of ink painting into the medium of woodblock printing. This print demonstrates his mastery of tonal variation, achieved through the careful carving of the woodblock to replicate the nuances of brush and ink. It is a work that rewards close inspection, revealing the subtle interplay between the rigid lines of the willow and the fluid movement of the water.
