A traditional ink wash painting by Kano Yasunobu, featuring a bird perched on a bamboo stalk, executed with the characteristic precision of the Kano school.
This ink wash painting, attributed to Kano Yasunobu, demonstrates the aesthetic principles of the Kano school during the Edo period. Yasunobu, the seventh son of Kano Tannyu, became the head of the Nakabashi branch of the Kano family and served as an official painter to the Tokugawa shogunate. His work often reflects the disciplined brushwork and economy of form characteristic of this lineage.
The composition centres on a single, vertical bamboo stalk, rendered with varying tones of ink to suggest volume and texture. A small bird perches on a thin branch extending from the main stem. The artist employs the sumi-e technique, where the pressure and speed of the brush dictate the quality of the line. The bird is depicted with soft, layered strokes, contrasting with the bold, decisive marks used for the bamboo nodes. The negative space surrounding the subject is intentional, inviting the viewer to focus on the balance between the solid bamboo and the delicate avian form.
Such works were typically executed on paper or silk scrolls, intended for display in a tokonoma, or alcove, within a traditional Japanese interior. The monochromatic palette relies on the subtle gradation of black ink, ranging from deep, saturated tones to light, watery washes. This approach prioritises the capture of the subject's essence rather than a literal representation. The signature and seal visible on the lower right confirm the attribution to Yasunobu, placing this piece within the context of seventeenth-century Japanese ink painting. The work remains a clear example of the technical precision and philosophical restraint that defined the Kano school's output for generations.
