A refined six-panel folding screen featuring delicate bird and flower motifs, executed in the traditional ink-wash style of the Kano school.
This work by Kano Yukinobu, a member of the influential Kano family of painters, reflects the aesthetic principles of the Muromachi period. The composition is presented across a six-panel folding screen, a format designed for the interior architecture of Japanese residences and temples. The artist employs a restrained approach, placing delicate depictions of avian life and flora within central panels framed by gold leaf and patterned borders.
The Kano school is known for its synthesis of Chinese ink-wash techniques with Japanese decorative sensibilities. In this piece, the brushwork is precise and controlled, favouring subtle tonal variations over bold colour. The birds are rendered with careful observation, perched upon branches that suggest the changing seasons. The negative space surrounding the subjects is intentional, allowing the viewer to focus on the specific details of the foliage and the posture of the birds. This use of space is a hallmark of the style, creating a sense of balance and calm.
The screen serves as a functional object, intended to divide space while providing a visual connection to the natural world. The inclusion of gold leaf provides a reflective quality that interacts with the ambient light of a room, shifting the appearance of the work throughout the day. The lower panels feature carved wooden elements, which add a tactile dimension to the overall design. This piece demonstrates the technical proficiency of the Kano school during the sixteenth century, maintaining a focus on traditional motifs while adapting to the requirements of architectural display. The work remains a clear example of the period's preference for harmony between the built environment and natural imagery.
