A classic Japanese screen painting by Kano Sanboku, featuring birds and seasonal flora rendered in ink and colour on a gold-toned ground.
This work belongs to the tradition of the Kano school, a dominant style in Japanese painting from the late 15th century through the Edo period. The composition features a screen format, which was a standard medium for Kano artists to decorate the interiors of castles and temples. The imagery focuses on the natural world, specifically the seasonal cycles represented by flora and fauna.
The artist employs a gold-leaf background, a technique used to reflect light within dimly lit interior spaces. Against this metallic surface, the ink-wash forms of the gnarled tree, rocks, and birds emerge with clarity. The brushwork demonstrates the characteristic Kano approach, combining precise outlines with subtle washes of colour to define form. The composition is balanced, with the heavy mass of the tree and rocks on the right side providing a visual anchor, while the left side remains more open, suggesting distance and air.
Birds and flowers, or kacho-ga, served as a common subject matter for the Kano school. These works often carried symbolic weight, with specific plants and animals representing different seasons or virtues. In this piece, the delicate blossoms on the branches suggest the transition of time. The artist manages the space across the multiple panels, ensuring that the eye moves naturally across the scene. The muted palette, dominated by earth tones and the soft sheen of the background, creates a sense of calm. This print captures the aesthetic of the original screen, preserving the texture of the paper and the nuances of the ink application. It is a representative example of the decorative yet disciplined style that defined the Kano school for generations.
