A six-panel Japanese folding screen featuring seasonal birds and flowers within cartouches, set against a decorative gold leaf background.
This six-panel folding screen represents the Kacho-ga tradition, a genre focused on the depiction of birds and flowers. Produced by the Kano school, the work displays the technical precision and decorative sensibility that defined the studio during the Edo period. The composition is structured around six distinct, fan-shaped cartouches, each containing a seasonal vignette. These panels are set against a background of gold leaf, which is further decorated with scattered gold flakes and stylized foliage. This use of gold creates a reflective surface that shifts with the light, a common feature in Japanese screen painting designed to brighten interior spaces.
Above each pictorial scene, a square cartouche contains Chinese calligraphy. These inscriptions provide a literary dimension to the visual work, connecting the seasonal imagery to classical poetry and philosophical themes. The Kano school artists balanced these textual elements with the naturalistic rendering of flora and fauna. Each panel captures a specific moment in the annual cycle, from the budding branches of early spring to the distinct blossoms of later months. The birds are rendered with careful attention to their posture and plumage, while the plants exhibit a controlled, elegant form. The contrast between the muted, earthy tones within the cartouches and the metallic brilliance of the surrounding gold leaf creates a visual rhythm across the screen. This piece demonstrates the synthesis of painting and calligraphy, a hallmark of the scholarly aesthetic favoured by the Japanese elite during this era. The screen functions as both a decorative object and a medium for literary contemplation, reflecting the period's appreciation for the passage of time and the natural world.
