Gozzoli, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, was a student of Fra Angelico and is best known for his frescoes, particularly those in the Magi Chapel of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence. The artwork is divided into two distinct scenes set within an architectural space. On the left, the newborn St. Francis is being bathed, attended by several women. An ox and donkey stand behind them, referencing the Nativity scene. To the right, a pilgrim prophesies the birth, while a simple man pays homage. Figures with halos suggest the saintly nature of the events. The buildings are rendered with a clear, linear perspective, typical of the Early Renaissance style. The colours are soft and muted, contributing to the serene atmosphere of the fresco. The composition is carefully balanced, guiding the viewer's eye through the narrative.
