A dramatic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II depicting a traveller caught in a rainstorm at Tatsukuchiyama in Bizen Province.
This woodblock print is part of the series 'A Hundred Views of Famous Places in the Various Provinces', a collaborative project involving several artists, including Utagawa Hiroshige II. The composition depicts the Tatsukuchiyama area in Bizen Province, captured during a heavy rainstorm.
The artist employs strong, diagonal lines to represent the driving rain, which cuts across the entire scene. This technique creates a sense of immediate atmospheric pressure. A lone traveller, protected by a straw cape, navigates the path below the steep, dark cliffs. The contrast between the deep, shadowed rock formations and the bright, saturated green of the foliage provides a clear visual hierarchy.
Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student of the master Utagawa Hiroshige, maintained the tradition of the ukiyo-e landscape print while adapting to the changing aesthetic preferences of the late Edo period. The use of bold colour blocks and the dramatic weather effect demonstrate the technical skill involved in the multi-block printing process. The cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the series, while the artist's signature appears in the lower left. This work offers a glimpse into the regional geography of Japan as it was perceived and documented by artists of the nineteenth century.
