In 1939, Georgia O'Keeffe travelled to Hawaii on a commission for the Hawaiian Pineapple Company. During her nine-week stay, she produced a series of works documenting the unique geography of the islands. Black Lava Bridge, Hana Coast-No. II captures the rugged coastline of Maui, where volcanic rock meets the Pacific Ocean.

O'Keeffe employs a simplified, modernist approach to the subject. The composition is dominated by the stark, dark forms of the basaltic lava formations, which contrast sharply with the bright, cerulean tones of the water and sky. The bridge itself, a natural arch carved by the sea, creates a negative space that draws the eye through the frame. Her brushwork is deliberate and controlled, focusing on the structural essence of the rock rather than minute textural detail.

This work reflects O'Keeffe's ability to distil natural forms into their most essential components. By removing extraneous detail, she directs the viewer to the interplay of light, shadow, and geological mass. The palette is restricted to deep greys, blacks, and various shades of blue, which reinforces the cool, oceanic atmosphere of the Hana coast.
