A woodblock print by Ogata Gekko depicting the blacksmith Munechika forging the 'Little Fox' blade, assisted by a fox spirit. The work exemplifies Gekko's blend of traditional Ukiyo-e with Meiji-era artistic sensibilities.
This woodblock print by Ogata Gekko (1859-1920) depicts the legendary blacksmith Munechika forging the 'Little Fox' blade, assisted by a fox spirit. Ogata Gekko was a Japanese artist of the Meiji period, known for his illustrations and ukiyo-e prints that often drew on historical and mythological subjects. His work bridges traditional Japanese art forms with the changing artistic tastes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The print shows Munechika seated, clad in a blue robe decorated with white floral motifs, intently working on the blade. Sparks fly from the forge, rendered with dynamic lines and red accents. Above him hovers the fox spirit, its red hair flowing, wearing a light green and white robe. The spirit holds a tool, aiding Munechika in his task. In the background, a ghostly procession of figures on horseback adds a sense of mystery and the supernatural. The print is characterised by its fine linework, subtle gradations of colour, and the incorporation of text panels, typical of ukiyo-e prints.
