A woodblock print by Ogata Gekko depicting the blacksmith Munechika forging the blade 'Little Fox' with the aid of a fox spirit. The artwork combines mythology, craftsmanship, and Japanese cultural identity.
This woodblock print by Ogata Gekko (1859-1920) depicts the legendary blacksmith Munechika forging the blade 'Little Fox' with the aid of a fox spirit. Gekko, a prominent figure in the Meiji era, is recognised for his contributions to Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. His work often captured scenes from Japanese history, folklore, and daily life. The print shows Munechika, dressed in traditional attire, kneeling before a forge. Sparks fly as he hammers the metal. Above him, a fox spirit, with flowing red hair and ethereal robes, assists in the forging process. The fox spirit is a nod to Japanese folklore, where foxes (kitsune) are often seen as intelligent, magical beings. The scene is rendered in muted tones, typical of Ukiyo-e prints, with careful attention paid to line and form. The background features ghostly figures, possibly representing other spirits or historical figures connected to the sword's creation. The print combines elements of mythology, craftsmanship, and Japanese cultural identity.
