A 1920 lithograph by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, capturing the structural beauty of a begonia plant through rhythmic lines and tonal contrast.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his mastery of various printmaking techniques, including woodcut and lithography. Bladbegonia, created in 1920, demonstrates his ability to transform organic forms into structured, rhythmic compositions. The work focuses on the foliage of a begonia plant, rendered with a focus on texture and tonal contrast rather than strict botanical accuracy.
In this lithograph, the artist employs a dark, atmospheric ground that allows the lighter, structural veins of the leaves to emerge. The composition is balanced by the circular, sweeping motion of the leaves, which are contained within a pot at the base. De Mesquita uses a series of parallel lines and cross-hatching to define the volume of the plant, creating a sense of depth through the interplay of shadow and light. The background features subtle, vertical linear patterns that frame the central subject, adding a sense of order to the natural form.
De Mesquita often drew inspiration from the natural world, yet he frequently abstracted these subjects to explore their geometric potential. His approach to printmaking was methodical, often involving multiple states to achieve the desired density of ink and line. This piece reflects his interest in the decorative possibilities of plant life, a theme that appeared throughout his career. The work is characteristic of his output during the early 20th century, where he moved away from traditional representation toward a more stylised, graphic language. By stripping away extraneous detail, he directs the viewer to the essential geometry of the begonia leaf, resulting in a composition that is both grounded in nature and distinctly modern in its execution.
