A detailed, hand-coloured topographical engraving of Blanmont, Lorraine, from the celebrated 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' atlas.
This hand-coloured copperplate engraving depicts the town of Blanmont, situated within the Vosges region of Lorraine. Originally produced for the monumental topographical atlas 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the work reflects the meticulous cartographic and artistic standards of the late sixteenth century. Joris Hoefnagel, a Flemish master known for his contributions to natural history and geography, provides a bird-eye view that balances architectural precision with regional character.
The composition is structured in distinct planes. In the foreground, figures in period attire traverse a rural path, providing a sense of scale against the rolling hills. The middle ground contains the town itself, rendered with careful attention to the density of rooftops, fortifications, and the prominent castle structure. The background recedes into a soft, undulating horizon, typical of the period's approach to topographical representation. A decorative cartouche at the top centre identifies the location, framed in a style consistent with Renaissance cartography.
The application of colour, added by hand to the printed line work, emphasises the varied textures of the terrain, from the dense green of the wooded areas to the warm, earthy tones of the cultivated fields and stone architecture. The sky is rendered with light, horizontal strokes, suggesting a clear day. This print offers a view into the historical geography of the Lorraine region, capturing the appearance of the town before the significant architectural changes of the subsequent centuries. It remains a document of both artistic skill and historical observation, reflecting the era's fascination with documenting the known world through detailed, printed imagery.
