A serene depiction of a Breton maritime tradition, featuring figures in traditional dress observing a boat blessing on the Belon River.
Maurice Denis, a member of the Nabis group, painted this scene during his time in Brittany. The work captures a local maritime tradition, where the community gathers along the riverbank to observe the ceremonial blessing of a vessel. Denis employs a flattened perspective, a characteristic of his approach to composition, which prioritises decorative surface qualities over traditional depth. The foreground is framed by two prominent tree trunks, creating a natural screen through which the viewer observes the river activity.
Figures in the foreground wear traditional Breton attire, including the distinctive coiffes, which are rendered with simplified forms. The water itself is treated as a decorative plane, with small, rhythmic brushstrokes suggesting the movement of the current and the reflection of the boats. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted earth tones, soft greens, and the pale, mauve-grey of the water, which contrasts with the small, bright accents of the flags on the yacht.
This painting reflects the artist's interest in the synthesis of observation and subjective interpretation. Rather than attempting a realistic depiction of the event, Denis focuses on the rhythmic arrangement of shapes and the quiet, contemplative atmosphere of the gathering. The composition balances the verticality of the trees with the horizontal expanse of the river, resulting in a structured, harmonious image. The work is representative of the later period of the Nabis, where the influence of Gauguin and the Synthetist movement remained present, yet the artist moved towards a more personal, decorative style. It offers a glimpse into the regional customs of early twentieth-century France, filtered through the specific aesthetic lens of the artist.
