This woodblock print by Ohara Koson, titled 'Bloemen aan waterkant', depicts a tranquil scene of flowers, a rock, and a bird by a stream, rendered in delicate lines and subtle colours.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist renowned for his woodblock prints, particularly those depicting birds and flowers (kachō-e). Active during the late Meiji and early Shōwa periods, Koson initially trained in traditional Japanese painting before transitioning to printmaking. He collaborated with various publishers, including Watanabe Shōzaburō, and his work gained popularity both in Japan and abroad. Koson's prints are characterised by their delicate lines, subtle colours, and naturalistic depictions of his subjects. His work contributed significantly to the Shin-hanga movement, which aimed to revitalise traditional ukiyo-e techniques. 'Bloemen aan waterkant' presents a tranquil scene of nature. A large, grey rock dominates the composition, positioned beside a stream. Pink flowers with slender green stems grow around the rock. A small bird flies low over the water. The water itself is rendered with flowing lines, suggesting movement and reflecting the soft light. The overall effect is one of serenity and harmony, typical of Koson's kachō-e style.
