A delicate lithograph by Dutch artist Theo van Hoytema, depicting a field of daisies in a stylised, decorative manner.
Theo van Hoytema was a Dutch artist known for his lithographic work, particularly his depictions of flora and fauna. Bloemenzee, or Sea of Flowers, demonstrates his characteristic approach to natural subjects through the lens of Art Nouveau. The composition focuses on a dense field of daisies, rendered with a delicate, linear quality that defines the petals and stems against the paper ground.
The work employs a limited colour palette, using soft yellows for the flower centres and muted greens for the surrounding foliage. Van Hoytema uses a rhythmic, repetitive arrangement of the blossoms to create a sense of abundance, filling the lower two-thirds of the frame. The upper portion introduces a contrast, with a line of trees and a suggestion of a structure in the distance, providing a sense of depth to the otherwise flat, decorative field.
This print reflects the period interest in stylised nature, where the artist prioritises the graphic potential of the subject over strict realism. The clean lines and clear separation of forms are typical of the lithographic techniques popularised in the late nineteenth century. Van Hoytema often produced these works as illustrations for books or calendars, and the inclusion of a blank rectangular space at the bottom suggests this piece was intended to accommodate text. The overall effect is one of quiet observation, capturing a specific moment in a meadow without unnecessary ornamentation. The work remains a clear example of the Dutch decorative style of the era, balancing observation with a disciplined graphic sensibility.
