Blossoming Cherry Trees - Sakai Hōitsu

Sakai Hōitsu was a central figure of the Edo period Rinpa school, known for his refined aesthetic and his revival of the style established by Ogata Kōrin. This work displays the characteristic Rinpa approach to nature, where decorative artifice meets careful observation. The composition is split horizontally, with a lower band of silver leaf providing a grounding element against the expansive gold leaf background above. This use of metallic leaf is a hallmark of the school, creating a reflective surface that changes appearance depending on the ambient light in the room.

The cherry tree branches extend across the panels with a calculated asymmetry. Hōitsu employs the tarashikomi technique, where wet ink or pigment is dropped into pools of still-wet colour, to create the mottled texture of the tree bark.
