A delicate ink wash painting by Goshun, depicting a plum branch under a winter moon. This piece captures the quiet atmosphere of the Shijo school.
This work by Goshun, a founder of the Shijo school of painting, demonstrates the characteristic focus on natural observation and atmospheric subtlety. The composition features a plum branch extending across the frame, its form rendered with fluid, controlled ink washes that suggest the weight and texture of wood. Small, delicate blossoms are scattered along the twigs, captured with minimal strokes that convey their fragility against the winter chill.
The background is dominated by a pale, circular moon, partially obscured by a soft wash that implies a misty or snowy atmosphere. This use of negative space is typical of the period, allowing the viewer to perceive the cold, quiet air of a winter night. Goshun balances the diagonal thrust of the branch with the static, luminous presence of the moon, creating a sense of stillness. The inclusion of calligraphy adds a vertical counterpoint to the organic curves of the plum tree, integrating text and image in the tradition of literati painting.
Goshun was known for his ability to synthesise the decorative sensibilities of the Kano school with the more spontaneous, naturalistic approach of the Nanga tradition. This painting reflects that synthesis, prioritising a direct emotional response to nature over rigid formal structures. The muted palette, restricted to shades of grey and soft sepia, emphasises the tonal range of the ink. By focusing on a single, evocative subject, the artist invites a contemplative engagement with the scene, capturing a fleeting moment of seasonal transition.
