A delicate ink painting of a snow-covered plum tree by the Shijo school master Goshun, capturing the quiet stillness of a winter night.
Matsumura Gekkei, better known by his art name Goshun, was a central figure in the development of the Shijo school of painting in Kyoto. This work, one of a pair of hanging scrolls, captures a plum tree in the depths of winter. The artist employs a restrained palette, using subtle ink washes to suggest the weight of snow upon the gnarled branches. The plum blossoms, rendered with delicate precision, emerge as small, pale accents against the muted background.
Goshun studied under Yosa Buson, a master of the Nanga style, before developing his own approach. His work often prioritises direct observation of nature, a hallmark of the Shijo school. Here, the composition is sparse, allowing the negative space to represent the cold, atmospheric conditions of a winter night. The calligraphic brushwork in the branches demonstrates Goshun's technical control, balancing the structural rigidity of the wood with the softness of the snow. The inclusion of poetic inscription adds a literary dimension to the visual experience, a common practice in the literati tradition of the period.
The scroll reflects the artist's ability to synthesise different stylistic influences into a coherent, personal vision. By focusing on the quiet resilience of the plum tree, Goshun invites the viewer to contemplate the seasonal transition. The work remains a fine example of Japanese ink painting, where the economy of means communicates a specific mood and environment. The subtle gradation of ink tones creates a sense of depth, despite the relative flatness of the composition. This print captures the original silk texture and the nuanced application of ink, preserving the artist's intent and the atmospheric quality of the original scroll.
