Blossoms by a River - Kawabata Gyokushō

Kawabata Gyokushō was a significant figure in the Meiji-period art scene, bridging traditional Japanese painting techniques with the observational rigour of Western realism. This work displays his characteristic approach to atmospheric perspective, where soft washes of ink define the rolling hills and distant peaks. The composition is anchored by the river, which draws the eye across the lower foreground, where a small boat carries figures through the quiet water.

The blossoms, rendered with delicate touches of white and pale pink, cluster along the riverbank and the lower slopes.
