A striking monochromatic work by Yves Klein, featuring his signature International Klein Blue pigment applied to natural sponges on canvas.
Yves Klein, a central figure in the post-war European avant-garde, developed a specific obsession with the colour blue. In 1957, he registered his own unique shade, International Klein Blue (IKB), which is characterised by its high concentration of ultramarine pigment suspended in a synthetic resin binder. This specific formulation allows the colour to retain its intensity and matte finish, avoiding the dulling effect often associated with traditional oil binders.
Blue Agreement (Accord Bleu) is a physical manifestation of Klein's desire to immerse the viewer in pure sensation. The work incorporates natural sea sponges, which are saturated with the IKB pigment and attached to a canvas surface. The sponges create a textured, three-dimensional topography that interacts with light to cast subtle shadows across the monochromatic field. By using sponges, Klein introduced an organic element to his work, allowing the material to absorb the pigment and become a vessel for the colour itself.
Klein viewed his monochromatic works as open windows to the infinite. He sought to move beyond the constraints of traditional representation, focusing instead on the metaphysical qualities of space and colour. The sponges in this piece act as physical anchors, drawing the eye across the surface while the uniform blue tone works to dissolve the boundaries of the frame. This approach reflects his interest in the immaterial and his belief that colour is a medium capable of communicating directly with the human spirit. The resulting object is less a painting in the conventional sense and more an environment of pure, saturated hue. It invites a meditative observation, where the viewer is encouraged to experience the physical presence of the pigment as a tangible, atmospheric force.
