Helen Frankenthaler remains a significant figure in the development of American abstraction. This work demonstrates her signature soak-stain technique, a method where thinned oil paint is applied directly onto unprimed canvas. By allowing the pigment to soak into the fibres, the artist achieved a fusion of colour and support that differs from the traditional application of paint sitting on the surface.

The composition features a central arrangement of organic shapes. A bold, circular orange form anchors the centre, surrounded by muted greens, browns, and a distinct blue element. The surrounding negative space of the unprimed canvas provides a neutral ground, allowing the colours to breathe.
