Blue Nude II is a representative example of the paper cut-out technique Henri Matisse developed during his final years. Confined to his bed or chair due to declining health, Matisse turned to scissors and painted paper as his primary tools. He described this process as carving directly into colour. This method allowed him to bypass the traditional separation between line and form, creating a synthesis of shape and hue.

The composition features a seated female figure rendered in a singular, intense shade of blue. The silhouette is simplified, prioritising the rhythmic flow of the body over anatomical precision. Matisse uses the negative space of the cream-coloured background to define the contours of the figure, creating a balance between the solid blue mass and the surrounding area.
