A dynamic Abstract Expressionist work by Franz Kline, featuring bold, gestural brushwork in a striking palette of deep blue, teal, and white.
Blueberry Eyes is a characteristic example of the later work of Franz Kline, an American painter associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement. While Kline is widely recognised for his stark, large-scale black and white compositions, his later output often incorporated a more varied palette. This piece demonstrates his signature approach to gesture and structural form, where paint is applied with deliberate, forceful strokes that suggest architectural or industrial frameworks.
The composition is dominated by a deep blue ground, against which bold, sweeping marks in teal, black, and white are set. A vertical, textured white column anchors the right side of the canvas, providing a counterpoint to the more chaotic, angular movements that define the centre. The application of paint varies in density, with some areas showing thin, translucent washes and others displaying thick, impasto layers that retain the physical evidence of the brush. Drips and splatters are visible, maintaining the immediacy of the artist's process.
Kline's work often draws comparisons to calligraphy, yet his focus remains on the physical weight and spatial tension of the marks themselves. In this painting, the interaction between the cool blue tones and the sharp, contrasting strokes creates a sense of dynamic equilibrium. The work avoids representational imagery, instead inviting the viewer to engage with the raw materiality of the paint and the energy of the composition. It is a study in balance, where the aggressive nature of the brushwork is tempered by the deliberate placement of colour and form across the surface.
