A classic woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting three figures in a boat on Edo Bay with delicate lines and a soft, harmonious colour palette.
Suzuki Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single woodblock composition. This work depicts a scene on the waters of Edo Bay, featuring three figures in a small boat. The composition is characteristic of Harunobu's style, which often focuses on slender, graceful figures and a sense of quiet, domestic intimacy.
The figures are rendered with delicate line work, typical of the mid-Edo period. The man, identifiable by his topknot and sword, sits alongside two women. Their clothing displays subtle patterns, and their postures suggest a moment of calm conversation during a boat trip. The background is simplified, with a distant, low-lying hill providing a sense of space without overwhelming the primary subjects. The water is indicated by rhythmic, flowing lines that suggest gentle movement.
Harunobu's approach to colour is restrained, relying on soft tones that harmonise across the print. The palette includes muted greens, soft pinks, and earthy browns, which create a balanced visual experience. Unlike later, more dramatic ukiyo-e works, this print maintains a focus on the human element and the gentle atmosphere of the setting. The print demonstrates the technical precision achieved by the carvers and printers of the period, who worked in close collaboration with the artist to achieve such refined results. This piece offers a glimpse into the leisure activities of the urban population in Edo, capturing a fleeting moment of daily life with clarity and poise.
