This six-panel folding screen, attributed to Tawaraya Sōtatsu, represents the aesthetic principles of the early Edo period. Sōtatsu was a founder of the Rinpa school, a movement known for its decorative use of gold leaf and bold, stylised natural forms. The composition features two wooden boats adrift upon a sea of rhythmic, calligraphic waves.
