A masterful seventeenth-century still life by Clara Peeters, featuring a detailed arrangement of fish, crustaceans, and kitchenware rendered with precision.
Clara Peeters was a pioneer of the still life genre in the early seventeenth century. Her work is characterised by a meticulous attention to texture and light, which she used to render everyday objects with precision. In this composition, she arranges a variety of seafood, including fish, crabs, and shrimp, alongside a brass colander and an artichoke. The dark, neutral background allows the metallic sheen of the brass and the varied scales of the fish to emerge with clarity.
Peeters often included items that demonstrated her technical ability to capture different surfaces. The contrast between the soft, fleshy texture of the fish and the hard, reflective surface of the metal vessels is a hallmark of her approach. The inclusion of a candle holder and a stoneware jug adds a sense of domestic reality to the arrangement. Her work is noted for its balanced composition, which avoids clutter while maintaining a sense of abundance. By focusing on the material qualities of her subjects, she invites the viewer to observe the subtle variations in colour and form present in the objects.
This painting reflects the broader interest in material culture during the Dutch Golden Age, where artists documented the goods and food available to the merchant class. Peeters remains a significant figure for her role in shaping the conventions of still life painting, particularly in her use of light to define space and volume. Her ability to organise these disparate elements into a cohesive whole demonstrates a high level of control over the medium. The work is a study in observation, capturing the physical presence of the objects with a focus on their individual characteristics.
