A traditional hanging scroll depicting the Zen patriarch Bodhidharma in a meditative state, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts Bodhidharma, the semi-legendary monk credited with bringing Chan (Zen) Buddhism to China. The figure sits in a meditative posture upon a rocky outcrop, his form enveloped in a heavy, vermilion robe. The artist employs a restrained approach, focusing on the intense, piercing gaze of the subject, which is a common trope in Zen iconography to represent the monk's nine-year wall-gazing meditation.
The composition follows the traditional format of a hanging scroll, incorporating calligraphic inscriptions in the upper register. These characters provide a textual layer to the visual representation, often containing koans or verses related to the nature of enlightenment. The contrast between the muted, earthy tones of the background and the saturated red of the robe draws the eye directly to the central figure. The brushwork is deliberate, balancing the fluid lines of the drapery with the solid, grounded weight of the rock.
Hasegawa Hakujun adheres to the conventions of Japanese ink painting, where the economy of detail serves to focus the viewer on the spiritual presence of the subject. The robe features subtle, repeating patterns, adding a decorative element that does not distract from the austere expression of the face. The work is mounted on a patterned textile border, typical of traditional Japanese scroll presentation. This piece offers a clear example of the intersection between religious devotion and artistic practice in the Zen tradition, where the act of painting itself is often considered a meditative exercise. The figure of Bodhidharma remains a constant subject in East Asian art, representing the pursuit of direct insight and the rejection of superficial knowledge.
