A detailed 1686 ink and wash drawing by Johannes de Groot depicting a social scene at a Dutch peasant inn.
This drawing by Johannes de Groot, dated 1686, captures a scene of daily life at a rural inn. The composition centres on a group of figures gathered around a wooden table, engaged in conversation and drinking. The artist employs a combination of pen and brown ink with grey wash to define the architectural elements of the inn and the varied postures of the patrons.
The scene is set under a simple timber-framed porch, which provides a sense of enclosure for the primary group. To the right, a couple stands near the entrance of the building, while other figures are positioned in the background, adding depth to the narrative. The architectural details, such as the leaded glass windows and the timber beams, reflect the vernacular style of the period.
De Groot uses the grey wash to create subtle tonal variations, which suggest the play of light and shadow across the figures and the building facade. The line work is precise, capturing the textures of the clothing and the rustic furniture. This work belongs to the tradition of Dutch genre scenes, which often depicted the activities of common people in informal settings. The artist's signature and date are visible in the lower right corner, providing a clear provenance for this study. The drawing offers a glimpse into the social atmosphere of a seventeenth-century Dutch establishment, focusing on the interactions of the individuals present rather than an idealised or moralising narrative.
