A detailed 1870 graphite and wash study of a traditional Norwegian farm barn by Gerhard Munthe, capturing the vernacular architecture of Skandshagen.
This study, titled Boerenschuur te Skandshagen, captures a traditional Norwegian farm barn with characteristic precision. Executed in 1870, the work reflects Gerhard Munthe's early focus on documenting rural structures and the vernacular architecture of his home country. The drawing employs graphite to define the log construction of the barn, while subtle washes provide tonal depth to the sod roof and the surrounding environment.
Munthe, who later became known for his decorative arts and fairy-tale illustrations, demonstrates here a disciplined approach to observation. The composition centres on the barn, which is rendered with attention to the horizontal stacking of the timber logs and the texture of the vegetation growing upon the roof. A single tree stands to the right, its foliage suggested through light, gestural marks that contrast with the structural solidity of the building. The presence of a wheel and scattered debris in the foreground adds a sense of lived-in reality to the scene, avoiding any idealised presentation of the rural environment.
The work is signed with the artist's monogram and dated 5 September 1870 in the lower left corner. The location, Skandshagen, is noted in the lower right. This piece offers a view into the formative years of an artist who would eventually shift towards more stylised, national-romantic motifs. As a study, it remains grounded in the physical reality of the Norwegian countryside, providing a clear record of agricultural building practices during the late nineteenth century. The muted palette and the focus on line work make this an example of nineteenth-century topographical drawing, where the primary objective is the accurate representation of a specific site.
