David Cox, a central figure in the Birmingham School of painters, produced this depiction of Bolton Abbey during his later career. Known primarily for his mastery of watercolour, Cox transitioned to oil painting in his final decades, applying the same atmospheric sensitivity to the medium. This work captures the ruins of the Augustinian monastery in Yorkshire, a site that drew many artists of the period due to its historical associations and picturesque setting along the River Wharfe.

The composition follows a traditional pastoral arrangement. A large, mature tree dominates the left foreground, its foliage rendered with the loose, expressive brushwork that became a hallmark of Cox's mature style.
