A delicate drypoint print by Impressionist artist Berthe Morisot, capturing the quiet atmosphere of trees by a pond in the Bois de Boulogne.
This drypoint print by Berthe Morisot captures a quiet moment in the Bois de Boulogne, a large public park on the western edge of Paris. Morisot, a central figure within the Impressionist circle, frequently turned her attention to the natural surroundings of the city and her own domestic sphere. Her approach to printmaking mirrors the spontaneity found in her paintings, relying on a delicate, economical use of line to suggest form rather than defining it with rigid boundaries.
The composition focuses on the verticality of two trees situated at the edge of a pond. The artist employs light, rhythmic strokes to render the foliage and the reflection of the trees upon the water. A small boat is visible near the bank, adding a sense of human presence to the otherwise tranquil scene. The drypoint technique allows for a soft, velvety quality in the lines, which Morisot uses to evoke the atmospheric conditions of the park. By stripping away unnecessary detail, she invites the viewer to complete the image through their own perception of the light and space.
Morisot produced a limited number of etchings and drypoints during her career, often experimenting with the medium to capture fleeting impressions. This work demonstrates her ability to translate the immediacy of her plein-air observations into a graphic format. The print reflects the interest of the Impressionists in the changing effects of light and the casual, unposed nature of modern life. It remains a subtle example of her technical skill and her preference for subjects that offer a sense of calm and observation. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its status as a significant example of her graphic output.
