A minimalist lithograph by Dutch artist Kees Stoop, capturing a line of trees against a rolling countryside with precise, rhythmic mark-making.
Kees Stoop was a Dutch artist known for his disciplined approach to printmaking and drawing. This work, titled Bomen in glooiend landschap, demonstrates his focus on the structural qualities of nature. The composition features a line of trees set against a gentle slope, rendered with a precise, repetitive mark-making technique that defines the form of the branches and the texture of the terrain.
Stoop often utilised lithography to explore the interplay between light and shadow. In this piece, the artist avoids unnecessary detail, choosing instead to capture the essence of the trees through controlled pressure and tonal variation. The background is suggested through subtle hatching, which creates a sense of distance without relying on traditional perspective. The stark contrast between the dense, dark foliage and the expansive, empty foreground provides a sense of quietude.
His work is characterised by a restrained aesthetic. By stripping away extraneous elements, Stoop directs the viewer to the rhythm of the vertical trunks and the horizontal sweep of the ground. This print reflects his broader interest in the Dutch countryside, where he frequently observed the subtle shifts in light and form. The work is a study in balance, where the weight of the trees is countered by the vast negative space of the paper. It is a clear example of his ability to transform a simple observation into a structured visual statement.
