A detailed seventeenth-century etching of the Roman Forum, featuring the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Curia Julia.
This etching depicts the Roman Forum, focusing on the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Curia Julia. Produced by the publishing house of Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi in Rome, the print captures the site during the seventeenth century. The composition presents the triumphal arch on the left, with its inscription clearly visible, while the Curia Julia, then serving as the Church of Sant'Adriano, occupies the right side of the frame.
The artist employs precise line work to delineate the weathered stone surfaces and the architectural details of these ancient structures. Small figures populate the foreground, providing a sense of scale to the ruins. The sky is rendered with simple, parallel hatching, a common technique in topographical prints of the period to suggest atmosphere without distracting from the primary subject.
De' Rossi was a prominent publisher in Rome, known for disseminating views of the city to a European audience. This work belongs to a broader tradition of documenting the physical state of Roman antiquities. The text at the base of the print offers a contemporary interpretation of the ruins, identifying the structures and their historical associations as understood by scholars of the era. The print serves as a record of how these monuments appeared before later archaeological excavations altered the site. The clarity of the etching makes it a useful reference for those interested in the history of Roman topography and the evolution of the Forum through the eyes of early modern observers.
