A 1926 Cubist still life by Juan Gris, featuring a guitar and book rendered through geometric planes and a muted, earthy palette.
Juan Gris, a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism, produced this work in 1926. The composition demonstrates his rigorous approach to the still life genre, where objects are deconstructed into geometric planes and reassembled to create a new visual logic. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented Analytic Cubism, this piece employs a clearer structure, balancing the flat surface of the canvas with the suggestion of three-dimensional space.
The subject matter consists of a book and a guitar, two motifs frequently revisited by the artist. The guitar is rendered through overlapping curves and a bold, diagonal black neck, which anchors the composition. The book, positioned in the foreground, is depicted with open pages that create a sense of volume through subtle shading and light. Gris uses a controlled palette of muted tones, including earthy browns, greys, and a deep terracotta border, which frames the central arrangement.
This work reflects the artist's interest in mathematical precision and the architectural quality of painting. By simplifying the forms of the guitar and book, Gris invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the objects and the space they occupy. The texture of the paint is applied with care, providing a tactile quality to the surfaces of the instruments and the table. The composition avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the interplay of light and shadow across the geometric planes. It is a mature example of his late style, where clarity and order take precedence over the chaotic fragmentation of his earlier experiments. The work remains a clear representation of the artist's ability to transform everyday items into a structured, intellectual exercise in form and colour.
