A book cover design by El Lissitzky for 'Suprematic Tale About Two Squares'. The design reflects the Suprematist aesthetic, emphasising pure geometric forms and their spatial relationships to convey meaning.
This book cover design is by El Lissitzky, a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist and architect. He was an important figure of the Russian avant-garde, helping develop Suprematism with his mentor, Kazimir Malevich. His work greatly influenced the Bauhaus and Constructivist movements, and he experimented with production techniques and stylistic devices that would go on to dominate 20th-century graphic design. 'Suprematic Tale About Two Squares' is a children's book published in 1922. The cover features a bold, geometric composition. A large black number '2' dominates the upper left, balanced by a solid red square in the lower right. The text 'ПРО' (about) is positioned near the number. All elements are contained within a thin black border on a cream background. The design reflects the Suprematist aesthetic, emphasising pure geometric forms and their spatial relationships to convey meaning.
