An 1896 heraldic bookplate etching by Sidney L. Smith, featuring a stag crest, floral motifs, and the motto 'PROPERO SED CVRO'.
This etching by Sidney L. Smith, dated 1896, represents the tradition of the personal bookplate, or ex libris. Smith was a prolific engraver and etcher, known for his technical precision in the creation of plates for private libraries and institutional collections. The composition follows the conventions of late nineteenth-century heraldic design, incorporating a shield, a stag crest, and elaborate mantling.
The central shield is flanked by floral motifs, specifically roses, which provide a soft contrast to the rigid geometry of the heraldic elements. Above the shield, a stag stands upon a torse, accompanied by the Latin motto 'PROPERO SED CVRO'. The entire scene is contained within a rectangular frame, which features a small cherubic face at the apex, a common decorative flourish in the period. The lettering is integrated into the design, with the owner's name, Charles J. Groves, positioned at the base within a dedicated cartouche.
Smith utilised fine line work to create texture within the shield and the surrounding foliage. The contrast between the dark, dense areas of the etching and the lighter, open spaces demonstrates his control over the medium. This print reflects the interest in personal identity and bibliophilic culture that defined the era. It serves as a record of the owner's heraldic associations and his personal library. The work is printed on a neutral paper stock, which preserves the clarity of the original plate marks and the fine detail of the etching process. As a piece of ephemera, it offers a glimpse into the private world of late Victorian book collecting and the craftsmanship applied to personal stationery.
