A refined ex libris engraving by Sidney L. Smith, featuring a rural vista framed by rococo-style ornamentation and symbols of scholarship.
This ex libris, or bookplate, by Sidney L. Smith serves as a refined example of the American bookplate tradition at the turn of the twentieth century. Smith, a highly regarded engraver, specialised in the creation of personal marks for private libraries. This particular commission for Cortlandt Field Bishop demonstrates his technical precision in copperplate engraving.
The composition features a central rectangular vignette depicting a serene rural vista, framed by an elaborate rococo-style border. The border incorporates scrolling acanthus leaves, shells, and floral motifs, which provide a decorative contrast to the open space of the scene above. In the foreground, resting upon a ledge, sit an open book and a small bowl of fruit. These objects act as symbols of intellectual pursuit and leisure, common themes in the iconography of personal library collections during this period.
Smith employs a variety of line weights to define the textures of the scene. The distant hills are rendered with fine, parallel hatching, while the foreground elements benefit from deeper, more deliberate strokes. The name of the owner, Cortlandt Field Bishop, is inscribed in a clear, elegant script at the base of the frame. The overall design balances the formality of the decorative surround with the quiet observation of the natural world. This print reflects the period interest in heraldry, classical motifs, and the elevation of the book as a physical object of value. The work remains a clear example of the craftsmanship applied to private commissions for the bibliophile community of the era.
