A formal 1913 bookplate engraving by Sidney L. Smith, commemorating the James Monroe Taylor Fund at Vassar College.
This bookplate, created by Sidney L. Smith in 1913, serves as a formal commemorative mark for the James Monroe Taylor Fund at Vassar College. Smith was a highly regarded American engraver, known for his precision and technical mastery in the production of ex libris plates for institutional and private collections. The composition features a central portrait of James Monroe Taylor, who served as the president of Vassar College from 1886 to 1914.
The portrait is framed within an oval cartouche, surrounded by classical laurel motifs that denote academic achievement and honour. The surrounding rectangular border contains the institutional identification and the specific purpose of the fund, established by the graduating class of 1913. Smith employs a refined etching technique, utilising cross-hatching and fine line work to create depth and texture within the portrait, while maintaining a clean, legible aesthetic for the typography.
Such bookplates were common in the early twentieth century, functioning as both a decorative element and a record of provenance for library acquisitions. The work reflects the period's preference for formal, balanced design and the traditional use of engraving for official academic documents. The clarity of the lettering and the balanced arrangement of the portrait against the text demonstrate Smith's expertise in the medium. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of academic history and the craft of fine engraving in the United States during the early 1900s.
