Description
A sixteenth-century woodcut border by Urs Graf, featuring historiated initials and classical decorative motifs surrounding a bilingual biblical text.
This woodcut by the Swiss artist Urs Graf represents the technical precision of early sixteenth-century book illustration. The composition functions as a decorative frame for a bilingual text, featuring the opening of the Gospel of Mark in both Greek and Latin. The border consists of four distinct woodblocks, a common practice in the period to allow for modular reuse in various publications. Graf employs a clear, graphic style, utilising strong outlines to define the figures and ornamental elements. The vertical side panels feature putti or small winged figures integrated into architectural motifs, including urns and scrolling foliage. At the base, a central shield is flanked by additional figures, providing a balanced anchor to the verticality of the side borders. The initials A and I are rendered as historiated letters, containing small scenes within their forms, which was a standard convention for luxury printed volumes of the era. As a practitioner of the Northern Renaissance, Graf brings a sense of movement to these small-scale figures. The lines are crisp, reflecting the limitations and requirements of the woodcut medium. The work demonstrates the integration of classical decorative motifs with religious text, a hallmark of the humanist printing culture in Basel. The contrast between the dense, dark ink of the woodcut and the white space of the paper creates a clear visual hierarchy, ensuring the text remains legible while the surrounding frame provides a rich visual context. This piece is an example of the collaboration between printers and artists during the expansion of the printing press in Europe, where the aesthetic quality of the page was as important as the content itself.
