A precise seventeenth-century engraving by Michiel le Blon, featuring a central coat of arms with a cat surrounded by elaborate Baroque scrollwork.
This engraving by Michiel le Blon demonstrates the technical precision and decorative flair characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. Le Blon, a goldsmith and engraver, applied his expertise in metalwork to the copper plate, resulting in a composition defined by fine, controlled lines and balanced symmetry. The design features a central shield containing a cat, surrounded by elaborate scrolling foliage, putti, and avian motifs.
The work functions as a model for decorative borders, a common practice for artists of the period who produced pattern books for craftsmen. The composition relies on the auricular style, where organic, ear-like forms merge with architectural elements. The central coat of arms acts as the anchor for the surrounding filigree, which extends outwards in a controlled, rhythmic fashion. Two smaller, pendant-like arrangements of fruit and foliage flank the lower section, providing visual balance to the more complex upper register.
Le Blon’s signature, 'Blon Fecit', is placed clearly at the base, identifying his role as both designer and engraver. The print reflects the broader interest in ornamental design that permeated European workshops during the Baroque era. By utilising a monochromatic palette, the artist focuses the viewer's attention on the fluidity of the line and the structural logic of the ornament. This piece provides insight into the professional output of a master engraver whose work circulated among contemporary artisans, influencing the development of decorative arts across the continent. The clarity of the engraving ensures that the individual elements, from the feathers of the birds to the texture of the fruit, remain distinct despite the density of the overall arrangement.
