Ito Jakuchu, a merchant-turned-painter from Kyoto, produced this work during the mid-Edo period. It belongs to the genre of kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower painting, which held a significant place in Japanese art history. Jakuchu is recognised for his meticulous observation of nature, a trait that separates his output from the more stylised conventions of his contemporaries.
