A classic Parisian cityscape by Antoine Blanchard, depicting the bustling intersection of Boulevard des Capucines and the Madeleine in a textured, impressionistic style.
Antoine Blanchard, born Marcel Masson, is recognised for his depictions of Paris during the Belle Époque. This work captures the intersection of the Boulevard des Capucines and the area surrounding the Église de la Madeleine. The composition employs a classic perspective, drawing the eye down the thoroughfare where horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians navigate the wet, reflective pavement. Blanchard utilises a palette dominated by golden autumnal tones and muted greys, which suggest a damp, overcast day in the capital. The application of paint is textured, with short, rapid brushstrokes that define the movement of the crowd and the flickering light of the street lamps. The architecture on the left and the classical columns of the Madeleine on the right frame the scene, providing a sense of structural stability against the atmospheric activity of the street. This painting reflects the mid-twentieth-century interest in nostalgic Parisian scenes. Blanchard often revisited these themes, focusing on the interplay between natural light and the urban environment. The inclusion of flower stalls and figures in period attire contributes to the specific historical character of the piece. The artist avoids excessive detail, preferring to capture the general impression of the city through colour and light. The result is a representation of Paris that feels both immediate and removed from time, maintaining the aesthetic traditions established by late nineteenth-century painters who sought to document the changing nature of urban life.
